Having once been seen across a lot of the UK, red squirrels have disappeared from large areas due to the introduction of grey squirrels. The red squirrel is now a protected species in the UK. Despite their small size, they play an important role in their ecosystem as seed dispersers. Red squirrels are now most commonly found in Scotland, pockets of northern England & Wales and some of the small islands off England’s south coast.
